Austin home service businesses get more leads by showing up where homeowners already look, and by making it easy to call once they find you. In practice that means four things working together: a Google Business Profile that ranks in the map results, Google Ads on the searches that mean “I need this fixed now,” a website that turns a visit into a call, and fast follow-up when the phone rings. Most businesses that feel stuck have one of those four broken, and fixing the broken one does more than adding a fifth channel.
Here is how each piece works for plumbers, HVAC companies, electricians, roofers, remodelers, and other trades in the Austin area.
Start with how Austin homeowners actually find you
When a water heater fails or the AC quits on a summer afternoon, the homeowner picks up a phone and searches. They type something like “AC repair near me” or “emergency plumber Austin.” What they see first is a set of ads, then the map with a few businesses, then the regular results.
Most calls for urgent jobs come from the top of that page. So the first question for any home service business is simple. When someone in your service area searches for what you do, are you there?
Check it yourself. Search your main service from your phone, from a few places you work. Look at the ads, the map, and the first results. That is your real competition, and it is often different from who you think it is.
Your Google Business Profile is the front door
For local trades, the map results carry a lot of weight. A homeowner can see your reviews, your hours, your photos, and call you without ever opening your website.
What helps a profile show up and get chosen:
- The right primary category. It should match what you most want to be found for. “Plumber” and “Water heater installation service” are different signals.
- Services listed in plain words. Add each service you actually do.
- A steady stream of real reviews. Ask every happy customer. Make it easy with a direct link. Reply to every review, good or bad.
- Real photos. Your trucks, your crew, finished jobs. Not stock images.
- Accurate hours and a phone number that rings. If you take emergency calls, say so, and answer them.
- Regular posts. Short updates about a job or a season’s common problem keep the profile active.
We go deeper on this in our post about what it takes to show up on Google Maps in Austin.
Google Ads for the jobs that cannot wait
Google Ads puts you at the top of the page on the searches you choose. For home services, that is usually the fastest way to turn on more calls.
The work that makes Google Ads pay for a contractor:
- Bid on intent, not curiosity. “Furnace repair Austin” is a buyer. “How does a furnace work” is a reader. Spend on the first.
- Use negative keywords. Block searches for jobs, DIY, parts, and services you do not offer. This is where a lot of wasted spend hides.
- Set your service area carefully. Target the parts of the Austin metro you actually drive to. If you do not want jobs in a nearby city, do not pay for clicks from it.
- Run ads when you can answer. If nobody picks up after hours, either staff the phone or pull back the ads at night.
- Track calls, not just clicks. A click is a visit. A call is a lead. Your account should count calls from ads and calls from your site.
Nathan Synoground, who founded Fruitful Local, has managed $3.8M across 19 HVAC, plumbing and electrical accounts, and $2.8M across 43 home services and construction accounts. The pattern across those accounts is consistent. The accounts that do well are tight on keywords, tight on area, and honest about which calls turned into booked jobs. More on how we run it on our Austin Google Ads page.
Facebook ads for the jobs people plan
Not every job is an emergency. Remodels, roof replacements, new HVAC systems, fences, and pools are planned. People think about them for weeks.
Facebook and Instagram ads reach homeowners before they search. A good offer, real photos of your work, and a simple form can fill your calendar with estimates for planned jobs. The catch is lead quality. Forms on Facebook are easy to submit, so you need a short qualifying question or two, and you need to call back fast. Our Austin Facebook ads page covers how that works.
Your website has one job
A home service website exists to get a call or a quote request. Everything else is secondary.
Look at your site on a phone, because most of your visitors will:
- Can someone tap to call from the top of the page?
- Is there a short form, with only the fields you really need?
- Does it say which services you offer and which parts of the Austin area you cover?
- Are there real photos and real reviews?
- Does it load fast on a phone signal?
A site that fails these checks will waste good ad spend and good rankings. Fix it before you spend more to send people there.
Speed to lead is the cheapest win
Here is the part most marketing plans skip. A lead that waits gets booked by someone else. Homeowners often call or submit to more than one company. The first one to answer usually wins the job.
Things that help:
- Answer the phone during business hours, every time. If you cannot, use an answering service.
- Call back form leads within minutes, not hours.
- Send a text right away to confirm you got the request.
- Track which leads booked and which did not, so you can see where they drop off.
You can double your marketing budget and still lose if leads sit for a day. You can also get more booked jobs from the same leads just by answering faster.
Know which leads became jobs
The last step is the one that makes the rest smarter. Track each lead to the job it became, or did not. Note where it came from: Google Ads, the map, Facebook, a referral.
With that, you can move money toward what works and away from what does not. Without it, every decision is a guess. You do not need fancy software for this at first. A simple spreadsheet updated weekly beats a fancy dashboard nobody checks.
Where to start
If you are not sure which piece is weakest, start in this order:
- Make sure calls and forms are tracked.
- Fix your Google Business Profile.
- Fix the mobile version of your website.
- Turn on or tighten Google Ads for your highest value urgent services.
- Add Facebook ads for planned jobs once the basics are working.
