How Much Does a Marketing Agency in Austin Cost?

How Austin marketing agencies price their work, what drives the cost up or down, and what you should get for the money.

What a marketing agency in Austin costs depends on how it charges, what it actually does each month, and how much of your money goes to ads versus labor. Most Austin agencies price their work in one of five ways: a monthly retainer, a percentage of ad spend, a fixed project fee, a performance or commission model, or hourly. None of these is right or wrong. The right one is the one that pays the agency for the work your business needs, and makes it obvious what you are getting.

This guide walks through each model, what pushes the price up or down, and how to tell if a quote is fair. We will not quote numbers here. Prices change, every scope is different, and a figure in a blog post tells you less than a written scope does.

The five ways agencies charge

Monthly retainer

A retainer is a fixed fee each month for an agreed set of work. It is the most common model for ongoing SEO, Google Business Profile management, content, and ad management.

A good retainer lists the work. Which channels. How often the campaigns get reviewed. What gets reported, and when. If the proposal just says “marketing services,” you have no way to tell whether you got what you paid for.

Retainers suit businesses that need steady work every month. They work less well when the scope is vague, because a vague scope tends to shrink over time.

Percentage of ad spend

Many paid ads agencies charge a share of what you spend on Google Ads or Facebook ads. The logic is simple: more spend usually means more campaigns, more testing, and more time.

The weak spot is the incentive. An agency paid on spend earns more when you spend more, whether or not that spend is working. That does not make it a bad model. Plenty of honest agencies use it. But ask how they decide when to cut spend, and look for a minimum fee or a cap so the math stays sane at both ends.

Fixed project fee

Some work has a clear start and finish. A new website. A Google Ads account rebuild. A one-time SEO audit. A tracking setup. These are often quoted as a single project price.

Project pricing is easy to compare between agencies, as long as you compare the same scope. Ask what is included, how many rounds of changes you get, and what happens after launch. A website with no plan for who updates it is a project that ends the day it goes live.

Performance or commission

Some agencies tie part or all of their pay to results: a fee per lead, per booked job, or a share of revenue. For a local service business this can be a strong fit, because it puts the agency on the same side of the table as you.

It only works if both sides agree on what counts. What is a lead? A form fill, a call over a certain length, a booked appointment? Who tracks it, and where? Performance deals fall apart when the definition is loose. Get it in writing before any ads run.

Hourly

Hourly billing is more common with consultants and freelancers than with agencies. It is fair for advice, audits, and small fixes. For ongoing work it makes budgeting hard, and it rewards slow work over fast work.

What drives the cost up or down

The model is only half of the price. The other half is what the agency has to do. These are the things that move a quote.

How many channels. Google Ads alone is one job. Google Ads plus Facebook ads plus SEO plus your Google Business Profile is four jobs, and they need to be run together.

How competitive your trade is in Austin. A roofer or a personal injury firm in Austin is fighting for the same searches as many others. That takes more testing, tighter keyword control, and more attention. A niche trade with fewer competitors can need less.

Your service area. Covering the whole Austin metro, including nearby cities like Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Pflugerville, means more locations to target and more pages or profiles to manage than a single part of town.

The state of your tracking. If your calls and forms are not tracked, the first job is fixing that. It is unglamorous work, but without it nobody can tell you what is working.

Creative. Ads need images, video, and copy. Some agencies include creative. Others charge for it separately or expect you to supply it.

Your website. If your site is slow, hard to use on a phone, or has no clear way to call or request a quote, ads and SEO will leak. Fixing the site may be part of the scope.

How often you meet. A monthly report email costs less to deliver than a weekly call or an in-person review. More contact is not always better, but you should know what you are buying.

Ad spend is separate from the agency fee

This trips up a lot of owners. The money you pay Google or Meta for clicks is not the agency’s fee. Your card pays the ad platform directly. The agency’s fee is for the work.

Make sure the proposal shows both, separately. And make sure the ad accounts are in your name, billed to your card, with the agency added as a manager. If you ever part ways, you keep the account, the history, and the data. We cover more on this in our post on questions to ask an Austin marketing agency before you sign.

What you should get for the money

Whatever the model, a fair agency deal in Austin should include a few things.

A written scope. Which channels, what work, how often. Plain words, not a list of buzzwords.

Access to your own accounts. Full owner access to Google Ads, Meta, Google Analytics, and your Google Business Profile. No exceptions.

Tracking you can see. Calls and forms counted in a way you can check yourself, not only in a report the agency writes.

Reports that answer business questions. How many leads came in, from where, and what they cost. Clicks and impressions are fine as background, but they are not the point.

A named person. Someone who knows your account and picks up when you call.

A clear exit. How much notice you need to give, and what you walk away with.

How to compare quotes

Put the proposals side by side and ask the same questions of each.

What exactly happens each month? Who does it? How will I know if it is working? What happens if it is not? Do I own everything?

A cheap quote that leaves out tracking or reporting is not cheap. You just will not know what you lost. An expensive quote that adds services you do not need is not better. Match the scope to the job you need done.

How Fruitful Local charges

Fruitful Local is based in Austin and works with Austin businesses in person, mostly local service businesses and contractors. We quote after we have looked at your current ads, your Google Business Profile, and your site, because the right scope depends on what is already there. We do not publish prices for that reason.

For context on experience: Nathan Synoground, who founded Fruitful Local, has managed $20.5M in Google Ads across 150 client accounts since 2018. That spend sat in many different pricing setups, and the lesson is the same every time. The model matters less than whether everyone agrees on what a good result looks like before the work starts.

The short version

Agencies in Austin charge by retainer, by a share of ad spend, by project, by results, or by the hour. The price follows the scope: how many channels, how competitive your trade is, how wide your service area is, and how much needs fixing first. Ad spend is separate from the fee. Whatever you pay, you should own your accounts, see your own tracking, and know exactly what happens each month.
