Questions to Ask an Austin Marketing Agency Before You Sign

The questions an Austin business owner should ask a marketing agency before signing: who does the work, what you own, how results are counted, and how you leave.

Before you sign with an Austin marketing agency, ask who will do the work, what you will own, how results will be counted, what happens in the first month, and how you can leave. Those five areas cover most of the ways an agency relationship goes wrong. The questions below turn them into plain things you can ask in a meeting, along with what a good answer sounds like.

Print this, bring it, and write the answers down. Ask every agency the same questions so you can compare them fairly. That includes us.

About the people

Who will manage my account day to day? You want a name, not a department. Ask whether that person is an employee, a contractor, or another company the agency hands work to.

Can I meet them before I sign? If the person who sells you is not the person who runs your account, meet the second one. That is who you will rely on.

How many accounts does that person look after? There is no perfect number. You are listening for an honest answer and a sense of whether your account will get real attention.

What kinds of businesses do you work with most? A local service business is different from an online store or a software company. Look for an agency that already knows how a business like yours gets customers.

About ownership and access

Will the ad accounts, Google Business Profile, analytics and website be in my name? The right answer is yes. The agency gets access. You keep ownership.

If we stop working together, what do I keep? A good answer is short: everything. Your accounts, your data, your website, your content, your phone tracking numbers if they can be moved.

Who owns the creative and the copy you make for me? Ask whether you can keep using ads, photos, videos and pages after you leave.

About the plan

What will you do in the first thirty days? Look for an audit, a tracking check, and a short written plan before money is spent. Be cautious about any agency that wants to launch on day one without looking at what you have.

What do you need from me? Good agencies need access, answers about your services and margins, and a person on your side who responds. If they need nothing, they will be guessing.

Which channels do you recommend for my business, and why? Listen for reasons tied to your customers. Google Ads catches people searching now. Facebook creates demand. SEO and Google Maps build over time. The mix should fit your goals, not the agency’s menu.

What would you not do for us? An honest agency will tell you what it thinks is a waste of your money. That answer tells you a lot.

About results and reporting

What will you report on each month? You want calls, form leads, booked jobs where they can be tracked, and cost per booked job. Clicks and impressions are fine as supporting detail.

How will you know which leads became customers? This often needs your help, like marking leads in a CRM or a shared sheet. An agency that asks for this is focused on the right number.

How do you track phone calls? For most local businesses the phone is the main lead channel. Ask how calls from ads and from Google Maps will be counted.

Can I see a real example of your reporting? Ask for a sample with client details removed. You will see quickly whether it is useful or just long.

What results can you show for businesses like mine? Ask for numbers you could check, not adjectives. For example, our founder Nathan Synoground has managed $20.5M in Google Ads across 150 client accounts since 2018, including $2.8M across 43 home services and construction accounts. Any agency should be able to show its own evidence the same way.

Do you guarantee results? Be careful with a yes. Nobody controls the market or Google. A good agency promises the work it will do and the way it will measure it.

About money and contracts

How is your fee structured? Flat monthly fee, a share of ad spend, project fees, or a performance model. Each has trade-offs. We explain them in how much a marketing agency in Austin costs.

Is ad spend separate from your fee, and who pays the ad platforms? Ideally ad spend is billed by Google and Meta straight to your card. Then you always know what was spent.

Are there setup fees or extra charges? Ask about landing pages, creative, call tracking and software. Get the full list before you sign.

How long is the contract, and how do I end it? Know the term, the notice period, and what happens to your accounts at the end.

About working together

How often will we talk, and with whom? A short monthly call with the person running your account is a good baseline.

How fast do you reply to a message? Ask what happens when you need a change before a busy weekend.

Will you meet me in person? For a local business, a visit to see the shop or a job site helps an agency write better ads and spot problems with lead handling. We explain why in why meeting your agency in person matters.

Do you know the area I want to serve? The Austin metro is large. Ask how they would set your service area, and whether nearby cities like Cedar Park or Pflugerville fit your goals.

Red flags to listen for

A few answers should make you slow down:

  • They will not say who does the work.
  • The ad accounts would be in their name.
  • They promise a ranking or a specific number of leads.
  • The report is all clicks and impressions.
  • Leaving is hard or expensive.
  • They do not ask you many questions.

Using the answers

After each meeting, score the answers against your own priorities. The agency that listened best, was clearest about ownership and reporting, and named the person doing the work is usually the safer choice, even if it is not the biggest or the flashiest.
